Stephen D. Engle's "Gathering to Save a Nation"

Stephen D. Engle is professor of history at Florida Atlantic University and director of the Alan B. and Charna Larkin Symposium on the American Presidency.

His new book Gathering to Save a Nation: Lincoln and the Union's War Governors.

Here Engle shares his choice for the actor to play one the main figures in the story, Governor of Massachusetts John Andrew, in an adaptation of the book:
I would cast John Goodman as John Andrew because he could best embody the forceful, direct, and often blunt characteristics that Andrew displayed in getting his way with political adversaries….he looks the part….with his short, rotund features….
